Isuzu – Blastroom for earth moving machinery

Burwell designed and supplied a large-scale blast room facility for Isuzu Australia Limited at their operations in Burton, South Australia, supporting the surface preparation of heavy earthmoving equipment.

Key Benefits

  • Integrated Production Line: Seamless alignment with existing slab and rail tracks
  • Increased Productivity: Mechanised blasting replaces labour-intensive hand preparation
  • Large Equipment Capacity: Handles locomotives and heavy rail machinery
  • Efficient Dust Control: Engineered system maintains clean, safe working conditions

The Burwell blast room dramatically improved production times, surface quality, and operator safety, transforming Plasser’s surface preparation process for locomotives and rail equipment.

The blast room was engineered with internal dimensions of 8 m wide × 8 m high × 27 m long, allowing the facility to accommodate large earthmoving machinery and structural components prior to coating and refurbishment. The largest items processed in the room include heavy earthmoving assemblies and large fabricated components used in off-highway equipment.

The blast room was designed to accommodate some of the largest vehicles sold and serviced by North East Isuzu, including heavy-duty models such as the Isuzu Giga 455 CXY and other trucks from the Isuzu Giga Series. These vehicles can operate at gross vehicle masses of up to 24,000–30,000+ kg and are commonly used in demanding applications such as construction, quarrying, and off-road industrial work.

Key Features

  • High Productivity Abrasive Reclamation System. The blast room incorporates a high-efficiency floor recovery and recycling system that continuously collects spent abrasive and returns it to the blast machines. This allows operators to maintain high blasting productivity while reducing abrasive consumption and downtime.
  • Dual Abrasive Capability. The system was designed to operate with both steel grit and garnet abrasives, giving the facility flexibility to select the most suitable media depending on the blasting application, required surface profile, and project specification.
  • Bulk Blast Machine Loading System. Burwell supplied two bulk blast machines equipped with a safe loading system, enabling efficient abrasive loading while reducing manual handling risks for operators.
  • Heavy Equipment Capacity. With its large internal working envelope, the blast room allows Isuzu to process large earthmoving components in a controlled blasting environment while maintaining consistent surface preparation quality.

The completed facility provides Isuzu with a high-capacity blasting solution capable of handling large equipment while delivering efficient abrasive recycling, operational flexibility, and improved safety for blasting operators.

Frequently asked questions

Burwell design and manufacture high quality abrasive blasting equipment right here in Australia. Our range includes blast pots, dust collectors, blast cabinets and complete blast room systems, built specifically for contractors and surface remediation specialists who need gear that performs day after day.

Every product is engineered for durability, reliability and ease of maintenance. We take a long term view of manufacturing. That means stronger components, quality welds and designs that make sense on site, not just on paper. When you invest in Burwell equipment, you are buying equipment built to handle harsh Australian conditions and demanding industrial environments.

Because we manufacture locally, we also understand the challenges you face on site. We design equipment that is practical, serviceable and backed by ready access to critical spares. It is equipment built to last, not built to be replaced.

Yes, Burwell supply both purchase and hire options across our blasting equipment range. We understand that not every job requires long term capital investment. Sometimes you need reliable equipment quickly, for a shutdown, short term project or specialised contract.

Our hire fleet includes quality blasting equipment that is maintained to the same standards as our manufactured products. That means you can get on site with confidence, knowing the equipment is ready to perform.

Hiring can also be a practical way to test equipment before committing to a purchase. It gives you flexibility while maintaining productivity. With branches Australia wide, we can support your hire needs locally, reducing delays and keeping your project moving.

Whether you are scaling up for a large remediation project or need backup equipment to avoid downtime, we can provide a solution that fits your timeline and budget.

Burwell support a wide range of industries across Australia, including defence, marine, mining, oil and gas, infrastructure and industrial manufacturing. Our customers include large blasting contractors, remediation specialists and engineering firms responsible for preserving critical assets.

Surface preparation plays a key role in protecting steel structures, concrete assets, pipelines, marine vessels and industrial facilities. Proper blasting ensures coatings adhere correctly and assets achieve maximum service life.

We understand the pressures these industries face, strict compliance requirements, tight deadlines and high performance expectations. Our equipment and abrasives are selected and designed to meet these demands.

With branches Australia wide, we provide local support backed by technical knowledge. Whether you are working on a defence contract, marine refit or large scale infrastructure remediation, we supply equipment and abrasives you can rely on.
